An interview with Prof. em. Jürgen Sündermann, former professor at the Institute of Oceanography

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Sündermann is among the creators of the “Hamburg” powerhouse in the climate and marine sciences, and he had  significant impacts on the shaping of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.

Among his achievements in Hamburg were the expansion of the focus  of the Institute of Oceanography, and the making and shaping of the interdisciplinary marine and climate sciences, and its institutional underpinning. In Geesthacht he was a driving force of transforming a fragmented environmental science campus into a unifi ed coastal science institute.

In this interview, he speaks about his personal career and the metamorphosis of a number of smaller research groups into a powerful, internationally recognized science center, to which HZG (earlier: GKSS) contributes.
